Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan
With the revival of the Remai Art Gallery discussion taking centre stage today, there has of course been spill over onto Twitter. @MarkHorseman is against @RandyDonauer supports and @seanshaw is sitting on the fence (not necessarity against, but not entirely for--that's how I define the fence). Who's right? You tell me.

People should know the facts before they talk about this. The fed gov't would not give money to renovate but committed to a new building. Ellen Remai donated $30MM. The net cost to the city to build a beautiful new building will be less than a renovation, and the existing building just doesn't cut it anymore. There is history and sentiment attached to the old building - but that's what it is, an old building. Time to give Saskatoon a modern facility.

ReplyDeleteHowever, the nature of Canada's Action Plan would've permitted a "shovel ready" project that fixed the lead pipes that serve water to the city's core. (If you live downtown, enjoy your Pb, and I don't mean peanut butter).
Anonymous would also be right in saying that the Private Sector will always get more involved in new instead of renovated.
That said, considering that over 10,000 people in Saskatoon are drinking leaded water, is an Art Gallery what downtown needs? We could've approached the Private Sector and asked them what investment opportunities they'd be interested in. Instead of pushing an Art Gallery down peoples throats, we could've worked with the Private Sector and gotten more bang for less buck.
All that said, what's done is done. When voters go to the ballot box, they simply need to be reminded of the poor policy decisions of this Council, and if that's the type of Council they want to elect for four years of representation.

ReplyDeleteAwful. I think it needs maintaining, but to completely reno? We all know that they will just add ridiculous and not needed elements to the building. Maintain the building sure, but wasting money is wasting money. That money could go into fixing what we already have.
ReplyDeleteMoving the gallery downtown will be significant loss to the river trail. A running group has it timed perfectly as a public pit stop. Centralized services at River Landing doesn't seem to be the right answer in this case. The meandering trail from Persephone, Bessborough Gardens, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, the Mendel and then the University all make for a nice cultural walk. We'll loose that connection if the Art Gallery is downtown.

Thanks Anonymous. My understanding is that the Children's Discovery Museum will be relocating to the Mendel site so perhaps the pit stop will be maintained along with Museo?
